〜Embracing Your Values in New Grounds〜

This month’s We face is Atsushi Ohno, a student that just joined our English language school recently. A former French chef, Atsushi has begun preparing for a new stage in his life, by first gaining new skills such as the English language at We. We had the honor of speaking with him and hearing about his visions for the future.

今月のWe faceは、実は今年の9月からWeで学習を始められたばかりの英語学校の生徒さんの大野敦史さんです!今まで大野さんはシェフとして活躍されておりましたが、この度は人生の新たなステージへ踏み出すため、Weで英語を学ぶ事を決心されました。新しいチャレンジに自ら飛び込んだ大野さんの、今のお気持ち・考えをインタビューを通して伺ってみました。

Interview インタビュー

  • Q. So first of all, may I ask how your lessons are going?

    A. They're going great! Even when I don’t have lessons, I’m here almost every day to study. I've discovered lots of important ways to approach my English studies during my time here.

  • Q. それでは先ず最初に、レッスンの調子を伺ってもいいですか?

    A. レッスンは楽しいですよ。レッスンだけでなく、自習のためにほぼ毎日スクールにきています!そして学習を始めてからは、英語について色々と新しい発見をしていますね。

  • Q. That's very exciting to hear. What have you discovered, for example?

    A. Since I had begun studying as a complete beginner to English, I was quick to hit a wall. I tried brainstorming about the best ways to study, like writing down and trying to memorize all the vocabularies, but it wasn’t quite working. And then I realized, that if I don’t have the English cultural sense, understand the sensibility and rhythm of the English language, I can't truly grow.
I’m taking 2 to 3 lessons per week now, but other than simply studying & reviewing, I think it's vital to actually go to the lessons to constantly engage in English conversation to get a grasp of that “sense.”

  • Q. それはよかったです!例えばどういう発見がありましたか?

    A. 自分は全く喋れない状態から英語の学習を始めているので、壁にぶち当たるのが早かったんです。どういう風に勉強すればいいのかを考えて、単語を全部書き留めたり色々やってみているんですが、それだと学生の受験勉強みたいになってしまうんですよね。そして気付いたのが、英語の「ノリ」とか「勢い」とか、「感性」がないと成長できない事です。

  • Q. Yes I agree, learning a new language is definitely also about learning a new culture. Wow, you're putting very deep thought into your studies! Have you discovered anything else?

    A. I’ve also began using my days off to watch movies in English, with English subtitles! Rather than trying to “learn” English from the movies, I just let it flow. But I can pick up on words that I know, and I can gradually begin to generally understand. I feel like I'm actually learning quite quickly when I make it one big flow - listening to English, seeing the subtitles, and using what I learned during the lessons.
I know that if I continue this, I don’t have to first try to translate everything in my head. And that's exactly what I'm aiming for. To think in English!

  • Q. To always be in touch with English. It's great that you're making the best environment for yourself to learn. Is there anything you want to do once you learn more English?

    A. I want to go travel abroad one day! I've actually never been outside of Japan. Before, I wanted to go to France because of my job as a French chef, but now I'm interested in going to the West coast of the U.S. I don’t know why, but I just feel like it'll be interesting.

  • Q. 常に英語に触れる、自分にベストな環境を作り上げていらっしゃるその姿勢が素晴らしいですね。英語を身に付けて、いずれ挑戦してみたい事は何かありますか?

    A. いつか海外に行きたいです!実はまだ一度も海外に行った事ないんですよ。昔は料理をやっていたからフランスに行く事に興味がありましたが、今はアメリカ西海岸に行ってみたいです。具体的な理由があるというより、感覚的にですけど 笑

Interview Wrap Up

As Atsushi faces entirely new grounds as he step out into a new stage in his life, he seemed quite excited throughout the entire interview. It was very encouraging to see him continually discovering new meanings that English has for him, as well as continually embracing his values as he faces his new challenge.

While Atsushi talked about the value about learning new cultural senses, he seems to already have the strengths and versatility to face new challenges with enthusiasm and not hesitate to ask questions. We are honored to be able to offer a learning environment that can continue to support and encourages his wonderful qualities!
