How the Pronunciation of English Loan Words is Altered in Japanese

[1]  多くの英語の言葉が日本語に取り入れられています。

Ookuno Eigo no Kotoba ga nihongo ni toriirerarete imasu.

Many English words have been adopted into Japanese.

[2] しかし、これらは日本語の音声に合わせて発音されます。

Shikashi, Korera ha/wa nihongo no onsei ni awasete hatsuon saremasu.

However, they can only be pronounced with the syllabic sounds used in Japanese.

[3] そのため、英語から取り入れたすべての言葉の発音は多少かわります。

Sonotame, Eigo kara toriireta subeteno kotoba no haston ha/wa tasyou kawarimasu.

So, pronunciation of all English loan words are slightly altered.

[4] 長い言葉の多くは省略されます。

Nagai kotoba no ooku ha/wa syouryaku saremasu.

Many long words are abbreviated.

[5] たとえば、 televisionは テレビ、 buildingは ビルと短くなります。

Tatoeba, television ha/wa terebi, building ha/wa biru to mijikaku narimasu.

For instance, television is shortened to terebi, and building to biru.

[6] たとえば、personal computerがパソコンとなるように、

Tatoeba, personal computer ga pasokon to naruyouni,

二つの単語の一部をつなぎ合わせて

futatsu no tango no ichibu wo tsunagiawasete

一つの言葉にして使う場合もあります。

hitotsu no kotoba toshite tsukau baai mo arimasu.

In some cases, combinations of two abbreviated words are

used to make a single word, for instance, personal computer becomes pasokon.

[7] 日本語でセーターと発音されるSweaterのような

いくつかの英語の言葉は、日本人には理解されにくいです。

Nihongo de se-ta- to hatsuon sareru sweater no youna

ikutsuka no eigo no kotoba ha/wa, nihonjin niha rikai sare nikui desu.

Some English words are different for Japanese to understand,

especially words like sweater – which is pronounced as se-ta- in Japanese.
