‘We’ students who study while they work
Ms. Katerina (Czech Republic)
Q. What is your aim to learn Japanese?A. As the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Japan I meet and interact with Japanese people from all walks of life every day. Many of them speak English, German, French or even Czech, but many speak only Japanese. And as I find the language barrier rather frustrating, I decided to sign up for a Japanese language course. Of course I have a Japanese-Czech interpreter at the Embassy but for me being able to communicate directly is very important.
Q. Which aspect drove you choose 'We'
A. Originally, I chose "We" because of its location in central Tokyo. But very soon I discovered that there is more to "We" than "just" conveniently situated classrooms. I enjoy taking classes with my creative and friendly teacher, and I am pleased with the personal attention I get from my helpful student partner.
Q. How do you learn Japanese at (with) 'We'?
A. I take "regular" group classes. We cover all aspects of the Japanese language - grammar, reading, writing, listening, conversation. The great thing is that my teacher relates everything we learn to use in practice. The number of students in my class is really small. This is good because I get a lot of my teacher's attention but also bad because I have nowhere to hide when I forget to do my homework :-).
Q. How do you make use of Japanese that you have learned with us?
A. My Japanese is not yet good enough for use in official situations. But I use it as an icebreaker to open my speeches or conversations with Japanese partners. It also serves me well in everyday life, although it did not stop me buying yogurt instead of milk...
Q. Please give your message to who plans to start learning Japanese!
A. 努力!(Persevere!)
Mr. Alistair (United Kingdom)
Q. What is your aim to learn Japanese? A. My aim is to understand the people around me in my daily life.
Q. Which aspect drove you choose 'We'
A. It's a great location and the teachers were friendly from the start.
Q. How do you learn Japanese at (with) 'We'?
A. I have always had group lessons. It helps to interact with other learners and it's a chance to meet new people who are also struggling to communicate. With a job to do and a family life as well, I've always found it difficult to set aside regular hours for study, but the teachers at WE ask us to do homework and doing it has been good for my self-discipline.
Q. How do you make use of Japanese that you have learned with us?
A. Since I've been coming to WE, I understand better what's being said at work and at home. And, I've become more confident about using my Japanese in shops and restaurants. Sometimes I go into help at my daughter's school. It's nice to understand (most) of what the kids are saying.
Q. Please give your message to who plans to start learning Japanese!
A. 少しずつ!(Little by little!)

Q. Which aspect drove you choose 'We'
A. High quality teachers, wonderful staff, great location and a comfortable space.
Q. How do you learn Japanese at (with) 'We'?
A. I take private lessons because I have unusual work hours. I study 3 times a week with a my teacher for 1.5 hours and I also do homework each day. (well almost everyday!).
Q. How do you make use of Japanese that you have learned with us?
A. I use it everyday for both work and personal life. The more Japanese I know the more fun and rewarding life in Japan is. I actually think Japanese is the most valuable skill you can have in Japan and it is always worth the investment in time and effort for study. After 5 years of study the only regret I have is not studying more.
Q. Please give your message to who plans to start learning Japanese!
A. It may seem impossible at first but just keep going and don't give up. The first few months are the hardest but after that the pieces start to fit together and a new world will begins to open up. Study everyday a little bit and if you don't feel like reading your textbook or doing homework then find a more enjoyable way to immerse yourself in the language. For example reading manga, watching anime, films, television or doing language exchange. Making it fun makes it much much easier to learn. Ganbatte!
